    Why iPhone photos won't open

    Since iOS 11, Apple devices save photos as HEIC — the Apple implementation of the HEIF container, paired with HEVC compression. It is genuinely clever: a HEIC photo is roughly half the size of the equivalent JPEG at similar quality, and it can store extra information like depth maps and wider color. The problem is compatibility. HEVC is patent-encumbered, so support is patchy outside Apple's ecosystem: plenty of Windows programs, websites, web upload forms, older Android phones and editing tools either refuse the file or show a blank thumbnail. Converting to JPG (or PNG) trades the size advantage for a format that opens literally everywhere.

    For photographs, choose JPG: its lossy compression is designed for the smooth tones and gradients of a camera image and keeps the file small, with a quality slider to balance size against artifacts (around 0.85 is a good default). Choose PNG only when you need a lossless copy or a screenshot-like image with sharp edges and flat color, accepting a much larger file. Remember the conversion is one-directional in practice — re-encoding to JPG discards data, so keep the original HEIC if you might want to edit it later at full fidelity.

    Are my HEIC photos uploaded?
    No. The HEIC decoder runs as WebAssembly inside your browser — your photos are decoded and re-encoded on your device and never sent to a server.
    What is HEIC and why won’t my photos open?
    HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones and iPads use by default. It stores smaller files than JPEG, but many Windows apps, older browsers and websites can’t open it. Converting to JPG or PNG makes the photo work everywhere.
    Can I convert several HEIC files at once?
    Yes. Select multiple files and each one is converted; download them individually or use “Download all”.
    JPG or PNG — which should I pick?
    JPG is best for photographs and gives the smallest file. PNG is lossless and keeps maximum quality, at a larger size. For iPhone camera photos, JPG is usually the right choice.
    Does converting lose quality?
    Converting to PNG is lossless. Converting to JPG re-compresses the image; at the default 92% quality the difference is not visible. Lower the quality only if you need a smaller file.
    What about Live Photos or HEIC files with several images?
    The primary (main) image is converted. The extra frames in a Live Photo or a multi-image HEIC are not exported.
